God’s design for marriage includes specific roles that the husband and wife are to fulfill. In commanding her to submit to her husband, God calls the wife to follow her husband’s lead. Although the command is not popular in modern times, it is grounded in the fact that God has designed for the husband to serve as the head of his wife in a similar way to how Christ serves as the head of the church. Through intelligent, voluntary submission to her husband, the wife demonstrates a risky trust in God and his ultimate purpose for marriage.
