Salvation is entirely due to God’s free grace. Human effort receives no credit. But throughout history God has been pleased to communicate his grace to his people through physical, visible signs. Although we may be tempted to worship the signs rather than that which they signify, we must not make the opposite mistake of despising that which God has sanctified for his good purposes. We must take advantage of God’s ordinary means of grace, since he has promised by them to sustain our faith in the gospel to which they testify.
